A small studio with a quiet purpose: practice as homecoming.
Lumen Yoga began in a sunlit attic above a bookstore in 2014. Ten years on, we are still small on purpose — six teachers, a few hundred students, and a single, unwavering commitment to making yoga feel like coming home.
It started with a single mat and a kettle of tea.
In 2014, our founder Maya rolled out one mat in a borrowed attic and invited five friends. They drank tea, breathed together, and moved slowly through a single sun salutation. That was the first class.
A decade later we still keep classes small, the lighting low, and the pace steady. We have resisted growing into a chain. We have resisted the temptation to make practice into performance. What we offer instead is what we found that first morning: a quiet room, kind teachers, and the breath as the steady thread.
Four quiet commitments
Body-led
Your body is the teacher. We give you tools, never instructions to override what you feel.
Slow on purpose
We resist the modern tendency to make yoga another thing to perform. Slow is the practice.
Trauma-aware
Our teachers train in trauma-informed practice. Every cue is an invitation, never a demand.
Accessible
Modifications, props, and seated variations are taught for every shape, age, and ability.
Ten quiet years, marked
Five mats, one attic
Maya teaches the very first class above a bookstore on Linden Lane.
A proper studio
We move into the ground floor. Wood floors, plants, candles, and a lot of tea.
Live online classes
When the world paused, we opened a digital studio for students at home.
The first courses
We design our first six structured courses — Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Yin, Power, and Pranayama.
Still small, still steady
We now welcome students from 18 countries, while keeping every class at 12 mats or fewer.
